The Art of Encouragement

By Carolyn Brewer

“Encourage one another daily,” (Hebrews 3:13)

“Therefore encourage each other with these words.” (1 Thessalonians 4:18)

“If a man’s gift is ….  encouraging, let him encourage.”(Romans 12:8)

A few months ago I walked to our mailbox to pick up our mail, expecting the usual flyers and letters from various organizations requesting financial assistance but there was a letter from a lady who had been in my previous church for many years. We had worked together in the Children’s Program and Sunday School. During the time we worked together this same lady was going through many trials. She had made some wrong decisions in her teen years which led her into an abusive relationship. Eventually, she made the decision that she must move out. She had four children, between the ages of 1 and 8.She had not finished school so she had no education but she had a strong faith that God would provide for her and her family.

Due to her circumstances she moved to Fredericton where another church came along side of her and helped her raise her children by providing clothes, school supplies and other things she needed. She was able to get a good job that she enjoyed.

She is one of the strongest Christians that I know and God has blest her abundantly in the later years of her life.

In the letter I received, she was thanking me for my encouragement and being a strong mentor in her life. As well as for my good example and kindness.

I wonder if there is someone in your life you need to encourage or thank? These are difficult days and we all need each other. Who does God want you to encourage today?  It doesn’t have to be a letter. It could be a phone call or a card. You will be as blest as the person who receives the card will be blest.
